Trip Overview of Annapurna Expedition

Mount Annapurna is one of the popular mountains in the world known for trekking as well as expedition. Annapurna Expedition is located in the western part of Nepal and is the 10th highest peak in the world with an altitude of 8091 meters. It was first successfully climbed in the 1950s when two mountaineers Herzog and Lachenal climbed the peak for the first time. Annapurna is a 55 km long massif in the Himalayas, the highest point of which is Annapurna I, standing tall at 8091m.

Annapurna originated from Sanskrit which literally means “full of food”, and is roughly translated as Goddess of the Harvests. According to Hindu mythology, Annapurna is a goddess of fertility and agriculture. The entire massif of Annapurna and the surrounding areas are protected within the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP), the first and the largest conservation area in Nepal, established in 1986 by Mahendra Trust for Nature Conservation. The Annapurna Conservation Area is home to several world-class treks, including the Annapurna Circuit and the Annapurna Base Camp Trek.

Along with Pakistan’s Mount K2, Mount Annapurna is one of the world’s most dangerous mountains to climb, with a very high fatality rate. The prospective mountaineers and climbers will have to prepare well before the expedition as they will have to face and come across many hidden obstacles during the course of the Annapurna expedition. The climbers will have to negotiate high altitude, inclement (unfavorable) weather conditions, exhaustion, and several other hindrances before they successfully accomplish the expedition of one of the world-famous and also difficult mountains.

As the expedition itinerary is quite long, it takes nearly two months for the entire expedition to complete. Annapurna climbers are suggested to come prepared both physically as well as mentally. Besides the obvious requirements of physical stamina and endurance to climb the peak, the trekkers will also need to have patience and mental strength to actually get to the top of one of the finest and most challenging peaks in the world and also return safely.

You will visit the Durbar Squares of Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur and also visit the Stupas of Swyambhunath and Bouddhanath. The Hindu temple of Pashupatinath will be another site that you will be visiting on the second day in Kathmandu. All these sites have been enlisted in UNESCO's world heritage list. Meanwhile, ‘Tourist Link’ will get the permission required for the Annapurna expedition. In the evening, you will return back to the hotel.

On the third day, you will have breakfast at the hotel in the morning and drive to Beni from Kathmandu along the Prithvi Highway. Your official Annapurna expedition starts on the fourth morning as you take breakfast at the guesthouse in the morning and start your trek. A brief and comfortable walk from Beni for around 2-3 hours will take you to Tatopani where you can find a local hot water spring. Many trekkers will be seen taking dips in the hot water spring as it is believed that dipping in the hot water spring cures several skin diseases. Overnight stay at a guesthouse.

The following day, you will trek for close to 5-6 hours walking along the trail and going past several local villages in the Annapurna region. Ghasa, the destination for the fifth day, is a small village in Annapurna. Overnight stay at a guesthouse.

The trail now gets slowly difficult as you will climb up the altitude. Thulo Bugin has situated around 4000 meters altitude and you will have to hike carefully as the problem of high altitude sickness might arise causing problems for you. In this situation, you are advised to hike slowly drinking enough fluids.

The next day, you will cross the Thulo Bugin Pass located at an altitude of 4281 meters. You will get to see the panoramic view of the Annapurna mountain range while you cross the Bugin Pass. Crossing Bugin Pass is one of the highlights of the Annapurna expedition.

After crossing Thulo Bugin Pass, you will make your way toward Mristi Khola. You will have to walk for around 3-4 hours to reach Mristi Khola. By the end of the 9th day, you will have come very close to Annapurna Mountain and are almost ready to start the expedition.

Annapurna Base Camp is situated at around 4800 meters altitude and upon reaching the Base Camp you will prepare for the expedition which will follow from the next day. You will have to make sure you have all the equipment necessary for the expedition. You will set up a tented camp at the Base Camp and spend the night there.

On the 11th day of the expedition, we will start our journey from the Base Camp. As we will have Sherpa guides, carriers, and other helpers, there is no need to worry and fear about climbing. Our team members will make sure that you will have no such difficulty in climbing Everest. It will nearly take 35 days to reach the summit of Annapurna from Base Camp and return. It will surely be one of your life moments when you reach the top of the peak and then return with all the memories of the trek.

After returning from the expedition, you will spend a day at the Base Camp cleaning up and disposing of waste materials safely. Keeping Base Camp clean is one of the important things you need to know and be careful about during any expedition in Nepal. You will spend overnight at a tented camp.

The next day onwards, your return journey from the Annapurna Base Camp begins as you hike down to Thulo Bugin from the Base Camp. The downward hiking will be much easier than climbing uphill. Overnight stay at a guesthouse.

Continuing the return trail, you will further descend down from Thulo Bugin to Lete village on the 49th day. It will take around four hours to reach Lete.

The next day, you will catch a flight to Pokhara from Jomsom. In about 30 minutes, you will land at Pokhara from Jomsom, enjoying the scenic mountain flight.
